We were saddened to hear of the death of Peter Vansittart over the weekend. One of our most distinguished authors and master of the historical novel, he will be a great loss to those who knew him and will remain an irreplaceable figure in the literary world.

This is indeed a great loss although, since Secret Protocols was openly advertised as his last work, not unexpected.
Peter Vansittart is often described as one of the finest historical novelists of postwar years. I would go further. He was one of the greatest and most original English novelists of the 20th century. It is a travesty that he never received wider recognition in his lifetime.
Peter Owen's continued loyalty over so many years to an author who sold so few copies of his works is to be applauded. Thank you.
